B.J. Sanford is a Managing Director with Promontory Financial Group, LLC, an IBM Company (“Promontory”). B.J. specializes in the interaction of financial regulation with business strategy and corporate structure. He advises financial services firms regarding strategic matters with a regulatory dimension, including regulatory applications, changes in business plan, acquisitions, reorganizations, new products, and compliance with regulations governing bank activity and structure. B.J. has assisted these firms with a number of de novo charter applications. In addition to advising traditional banking organizations, B.J. regularly works with independent leasing companies and other financial services companies that straddle the boundary between bank and non-bank. B.J. is actively involved in helping clients explore the prospects of securing an OCC fintech or ILC charter. A major focus of B.J.’s practice involves assisting global financial services companies seeking to establish, expand, or restructure their U.S. financial services capabilities and offerings. Before joining Promontory, B.J. was an attorney at the law firm of Covington & Burling, where he advised clients on a broad range of financial services regulatory matters. He began his career as a law clerk to Judge A. Raymond Randolph of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
